The cultural heritage of Oravská Polhora

The cultural heritage of Oravská Polhora is connected with the pastoral traditions and the Wallachian settlement. An exposition in the newly opened Museum of Wallachian Culture is devoted to them. Traditions of bagpiping are especially cherished in this village. It is not surprising that a certificate confirming the entry of the Slovak bagpipe culture into the UNESCO World Heritage List is displayed here. Every year a big folklore event called ‘Gajdovačka – International Festival of Bagpipe Culture’ is held in the village.

Another museum in the village is the Orava Museum of P. O. Hviezdoslav, Slovak writer and poet, situated in Hviezdoslavova hájovňa. In the neighbouring building, which belongs to the gamekeeper´s lodge, you can visit the exposition dedicated to Milo Urban, born here, a well-known Slovak writer and journalist.

Also noteworthy is the stone Church of the Divine Heart of Jesus from 1928 standing in the centre of the village. Behind the old church a new parish church was built, in front of which a monument to St. John Paul II was erected. There is also a plaque commemorating this highly respected Polish pope built into the stone monument erected by the inhabitants of the Slovak villages near Babia Góra on the top of Babia Góra.
