Route – section no. 8 (25 km)

Łętownia, church – Sucha Beskidzka, Market Square, The ‘Rome’ Inn

The last stage of the BGTWA starts with a short return trip along the county road in the direction of Jordanów, about 1 km. At the fork in the road, we turn right towards Osielec and after a little over 8 km you will reach national road 28 in the centre of the village. We will then pass through the villages of Kojszówka, Juszczyn and Białka to reach the town of Maków Podhalański (see page 74 for a possible city walk). From there, we continue along the national road to Sucha Beskidzka and the bridge over the Skawa river. After crossing it, turn left at the crossroads and follow J. Piłsudskiego Street to get back to the market square of Sucha Beskidzka to complete the loop of our trip. As it was said in ancient times – all roads lead to Rome, so it is hardly surprising that we ended up there. ‘Rome’ in Sucha is, however, much younger than the quoted proverb, as it comes from the 18th century.

THE ’ROME’ INN

The wooden inn called ‘Rzym’ (Rome) was built on the market square in Sucha at the time when fairs and markets started to be regularly held on the square at the crossroads of the main roads. The inn is a log building, covered with a huge, hipped, shingled roof with a ridge. The front part of the roof creates an arcade, supported by profiled columns. The decorative overhangs between the columns, connected at the top with double arches, attract attention. The lower part of the arcade is closed by a balustrade with a slatted, diagonal truss. The present condition of the inn is a result of a thorough renovation carried out in the 1960s. From the centrally located hallway it is possible to enter one of the two large chambers, located on opposite sides. In the interiors the beamed ceilings have been preserved.

It is believed that the ‘Rzym’ (Rome) inn in Sucha was a prototype of the one described by Adam Mickiewicz in his ballad ‘Pani Twardowska’. In the old days, apart from the legendary Mr. Twardowski and Mephisofeles, it was also frequented by famous Beskid brigands led by Józef Baczyński himself, the most famous harnaś (leader of a band of robbers) from the Podbabiogórze. They shared their loot here and planned new attacks. Today it is completely safe here, and the inn, which is one of the most interesting preserved buildings of its kind in Poland, serves tasty regional dishes. This is a good place to enjoy a well-deserved feast at the end of your trip.

While in Sucha Beskidzka, it is necessary to get to know more of its treasures and peculiarities, in which the description of a walk around the town will undoubtedly be helpful (https://visit.powiatsuski.pl/spacer-po-suchej-beskidzkiej/).
